REPORT ON HARNESSING THE UNTAPPED POTENTIAL OF MILLETS FOR FOOD
SECURITY, NUTRITION AND SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
The NSS unit of college had organized a talk on millets ie “Harnessing the untapped potential of millets for food security, nutrition and sustainable agriculture” on 28 th April 2023 at 12.15 pm to 1.00 pm . As we all know year 2023 has been declared by united nation as international year of millets, following proposal by India which wants to position itself as global hub for millets wherein its health benefits, cultivation, are to be highlighted. To build up momentum for popularization of millets and to make IyoM a huge success involvement of Goa university, all government and government aided colleges is required to contribute to it. As initiative to this our college had organised this talk. We invited Dr. Gopal Ramdas Mahajan Senior Scientist (Soil Sciences) at ICAR, Goa as resource person for
this talk. Resource person spoke on following aspects
Millet map of India
Importance of millets and nutritional benefits of millets
Composition of millets and Glycemic index
Water requirement of millets
Significance of Heritage crop -millet
Value added products of millets
The session got over at 1.00 pm , with a formal vote of thanks by the NSS coordinator Mr. Rajendra Gounder.
