The street play on Consumer Awareness, organized as part of the Consumer Awareness Program by the Consumer Welfare Cell of the college in collaboration with the Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, aimed to educate citizens on their rights and responsibilities while promoting informed decision-making. The Consumer Welfare Cell, GMFC, in collaboration with the Department of Civil Supplies
and Consumer Affairs, Government of Goa, organized a Consumer Awareness Program from
15 th January to 27 th January 2025. This initiative featured a series of informative and
interactive activities aimed at enhancing consumer rights, responsibilities, and awareness
among students, faculty, and the local community.
The program focused on educating participants about consumer protection laws, legal
metrology, fair trade practices, ethical consumer behaviour, and measures to safeguard
against fraudulent activities. It also aimed to empower individuals with practical knowledge
on identifying deceptive business practices, understanding consumer grievance redressal
mechanisms, and making informed purchasing decisions.
Activity 1: Awareness Talk on “Empowering Consumers: Legal Metrology and
Consumer Rights.

As part of the Consumer Awareness Program, a talk was organized, where the Department of
Legal Metrology conducted an insightful session on the theme:
“Empowering Consumers – Legal Metrology and Consumer Rights.”

The programme commenced with a lamp-lighting ceremony, followed by a welcome address
by the Principal Prof. (Dr.) Shaikh Mohammad Parvez Al- Usmani, who highlighted the
importance of consumer awareness in today’s economy. The Principal emphasized the
growing need for such initiatives, stressing that well-informed consumers can protect
themselves from exploitation in the marketplace. He encouraged students and faculty to
actively participate, engage with experts, and gain valuable insights into legal metrology
regulations, fair trade policies, and grievance redressal mechanisms. The principal also
expressed gratitude to the Department of Civil Supplies and Legal Metrology for their
initiative in promoting consumer rights and fair-trade practices.
Mr. Sujan Rane Sardessai, Inspector, Legal Metrology, began the session by explaining the
role of the Legal Metrology Department in ensuring the accuracy of weights and measures.
He emphasized the importance of standardization, the need for consumers to be aware of this
department, and its function in preventing fraudulent trade practices.
Next, Ms. Swezel Colaco, Inspector, Legal Metrology, continued by outlining the
department’s objectives, role, and significance. She provided valuable insights into packaged
commodities regulations, licensing requirements, weight and measuring instruments, and
consumer protection laws. She also enlightened participants about the Goa Legal Metrology
Act, standard units of measurement, and compliance requirements for manufacturers and
dealers. Furthermore, she guided them on how to approach the department in cases of
discrepancies in measurements, unfair trade practices, or complaints regarding packaged
goods.
Overall, the session was highly informative, equipping participants with practical knowledge
about their rights and the legal protections available to them. It successfully educated
consumers on the role of the Legal Metrology Department and raised awareness about
consumer rights concerning packaged commodities, standard weights and measures, and
grievance redressal mechanisms.
An open session was conducted, where students and staff actively participated by asking
questions and clarifying doubts related to consumer protection and legal metrology.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Asst. Professor Mr. Sandesh Gaonkar, Joint Convenor of
the Consumer Welfare Cell, GMFC.
The programme was coordinated by Asst. Professor Ms. Kalpita Naik, Convenor of the
Consumer Welfare Cell, and was compered by Ms. Asiya and Ms. Shreya of the FYBBA
class.
At the end of the session, all participants were served refreshments.
Activity 2: Poster-Making Exhibition on ‘Consumer Rights and Responsibilities’

Number of Participants: 70 students (33 posters created)
The second activity was a poster-making exhibition on the theme ‘Consumer Rights and
Responsibilities.’ The objective of this activity was to foster creativity and raise awareness
about consumer rights and responsibilities through visual representation.
Students were informed about the activity and required to create a poster on the given theme,
submitting it by 15th January 2025. A total of 33 posters were submitted by the students
across B.COM, B.B.A and B.C.A with 70 students participating individually, in pairs, or in
groups. To reinforce consumer awareness, the posters were displayed in accessible areas of
the campus, including the cafeteria and hall, making the exhibition an engaging and
interactive experience.
The exhibition was inaugurated by the Principal of the college, Prof. (Dr.) Shaikh
Mohammad Parvez Al-Usmani, along with Inspectors of the Legal Metrology Department,
Mr. Sujan Rane Sardessai and Ms. Swezel Colaco.
The overwhelming participation and enthusiasm of the students highlighted the success of
this activity in promoting consumer awareness through visual communication. The exhibition
was open to all students to view and appreciate the creative work.
Activity 3: Street Play on Consumer Rights

Participants: 21 students from B.Com., BCA, and BBA

The objective of the street play was to engage the students and local community in
understanding consumer rights through an interactive and impactful medium.As the highlight of the Consumer Awareness Programme, the play effectively conveyed.
As the highlight of the Consumer Awareness Programme, the play effectively conveyed
various aspects of consumer rights and responsibilities through engaging performances. It
depicted real-life consumer issues, such as fraudulent practices, misleading advertisements,
and consumer exploitation, while also educating the audience on how to be informed
consumers.
At Usgao- Tisk Junction, the street play caught the attention of pilots, shopkeepers,
passengers waiting for the bus, and the general public, including those who had come for
shopping and other activities.
At the GMFC college premises, the play witnessed participation not only from students and
staff of the college but also from students of Government High School, Dayanand Nagar,
Dharbandora, who were on campus, and students from Government High School, Davorlim,
Salcete Goa who were visiting the college as part of an exposure and career guidance visit.
The students were accompanied throughout the four locations by Ms. Kalpita Naik, Ms.
Sneha Gaonkar, Ms. Siddhangi Naik, Ms. Manisha Velip, and Mr. Mahesh Gaonkar, who
guided them throughout the activity.
The audience response at all locations was extremely positive, with attendees appreciating the
relevance of the performance in promoting consumer awareness. The street play was
coordinated by Asst. Professor Ms. Kalpita Naik, Convenor, The consumer Welfare Cell,
GMFC, Goa.
As a token of appreciation, participating students were served refreshments and a meal, and
each student received an honorarium of ₹150/-.
Certificate Distribution Ceremony
The Certificate Distribution Ceremony was held on 4 th February 2025 at the college hall. The
certificates were formally presented by the Principal Prof. (Dr.) Shaikh Mohammad Parvez
Al- Usmani to the participants of the poster-making and street play events. In his address, the
principal highlighted the significance of spreading awareness about consumer rights and
responsibilities. He emphasized the role of students as agents of change in their communities,
urging them to continue their efforts in educating others about consumer protection and
ethical practices.
The students expressed their contentment and gratitude for the recognition of their efforts.
Ms. Kalpita Naik, Convenor of the Consumer Welfare Cell, GMFC, commended students for
their active participation and encouraged them to further disseminate the message of
consumer awareness within their communities. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms.
Sneha Gaonkar, Asst. Professor in Commerce.
Conclusion:
The Consumer Awareness Programme successfully fulfilled its objective of educating
students, staff, and the community on consumer rights and protection laws. The activities
awareness talk, poster-making competition, and street play provided a holistic approach to
consumer education, encouraging individuals to be informed and responsible consumers.
The initiative received a tremendous response, and the feedback from participants indicated a
high level of engagement and learning. This programme has paved the way for future
awareness initiatives that will further strengthen consumer protection knowledge among
students and the wider community.
